The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California has taken footage of what it believes to be the first instance of a deep sea squid eating a fish. In the video, a clawed armhook squid captures an owlfish and is attempting to disable it by chewing through to its spine. As a result of the struggle, the owlfish has shed a number of its scales in an attempt to dislodge the squid’s hold. According to the Institute, both species are native to deep waters the video was recorded using a remote vehicle.
